Michelle Jones

Role Summary

It is my privilege to be the Deputy Vice-Chancellor and Provost of Plymouth MarjonUniversity. Marjonhas a proud heritage vested in social mobility and civic engagement and I lam ambitious about building our impact and reputation, for not only teaching excellence, but also research excellence.

 

I am responsible for leading all aspects of academic strategy, performance, and planning ensuring alignment with the University strategy. This involves being responsible for the academic schools and ensuring structure, resources and culture enable excellence in teaching, knowledge exchange and research external frameworks.

Teaching

 

I was Dean of the School of Sport, Health and Social Sciences at Southampton Solent University 2015-2018, Associate Dean (Quality) in the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences at York St John University from 2008-2015, Associate Head of Department at Edge Hill University from 2001 to 2008 and started my teaching career at The University of Liverpool in 1997. During these roles I led strategic initiatives related to enhancing the student experience, improving student success and introduction of new curriculum areas such as nursing, biomedical science and sports therapy.

I have worked on partnerships with NHS trusts and other organisations of flexible curricula and apprenticeships to support the development of people and workforce needs, including leading a HEFCE funded degree apprentice development project.


Research

My research interests can be broadly classified as applied mixed-methods interdisciplinary research in relation to physical activity and wellbeing in young people. My research outputs focus on young people, physical activity and wellbeing and I am keen to maintain the applied nature of my research to impact positively on society. I engage in a range of professional research related activities including regularly acting as a referee for peer-reviewed journals. I have supervised several students on post-graduate awards and have PhD completions.
